SEC Announces ‘Project Crypto’ To Move US Capital Markets to the Blockchain
The SEC has unveiled 'Project Crypto,' a sweeping initiative to overhaul securities regulations and embrace blockchain technology. This marks the agency's most aggressive pro-crypto stance to date, following President Trump's GENIUS Act and the PWG report.
The project aims to enable on-chain capital markets, clarify rules for crypto asset issuance and trading, and replace outdated policies with blockchain-native frameworks. Short-term measures include interpretive guidance and SAFE harbors to foster innovation while new rules are developed.
Public blockchains may soon host traditional securities like stocks and bonds, alongside crypto-native offerings such as ICOs and airdrops. Custody rules will be modernized to accommodate smart contracts and decentralized infrastructure, eliminating the need for offshore workarounds.
